Learncarego - Church Missions
Internationals

PURPOSE:

Reach out to foreigners in our own communities with the hope that they will know and follow Jesus.

YOUR JOB:

You probably don’t have to drive far to find the other side of the world. People from all of the world, including people from unreached people groups, are coming to us. Internationals often live in tight-knit communities, have unmet basic needs, are open to all sorts of discussion and are curious about our culture and beliefs. The local church should not overlook this fertile field.

IDEAS:

Offer English as a second language course.

Start a church service in a different language, or offer interpretation by headset.

Make a connection with local college students. Invite them for Thanksgiving or other times of the year when all the other students leave campus.

Be a part of a refugee program. The government is often looking for help from individuals and organizations who will help people who have been offered safe haven in our country when they are not welcomed in theirs.

Join with a foreign language church to help them reach out to their ethnic community.

Plan social events for an ethnic group in your city, or ask if you can join in with their events.

  • A Muslim's Heart (23) (Saturday, 29 September 2007)

Muslims are not the enemy. They are simply people. People who need Christ. But they're also people who see the world much differently than Western Christians.

A Muslim's Heart provides Christians with a crash course in relating to their Muslim friends, neighbors, and coworkers. Without understanding the way a Muslim thinks and feels, and the cultural reasons for this, any attempts at evangelism will target the mind without engaging the heart. Geared for Christians who are attempting to relate to Muslims overseas or in their...

  • Building Bridges: Christianity and Islam (10) (Saturday, 16 August 2008)

Muslims and Christians have much in common. Although historically the relationship between Islam and Christianity has been strained at best, it doesn't have to be that way. There are many areas of common ground between the two faiths, providing ample opportunity to build relationships.

Fouad Accad grew up in Lebanon and spent most of his life there building bridges between individual followers of Christianity and followers of Islam. His passion was to bring two communities together-Muslim and Christian. What Accad built were bridges of understanding, communication, and love.

Building Bridges provides personal experiences based on a lifetime...

  • Cross-Cultural Conflict (40) (Monday, 17 September 2007)

Whether at home or abroad, communicating with people of other cultures is difficult. It requires new ways of thinking and interpreting the world. When conflict arises, as it often does, the issues become even more confusing. Without a good understanding of how different cultures handle conflict, our best intentions may only make matters worse.

With a particular focus on Asian and Hispanic cultures (at home and around the world) and on African culture, Duane Elmer walks readers through various types of conflict and shows how...

Experienced cross-cultural specialist Duane Elmer provides a compass for navigating through different cultures. He shows us how to avoid pitfalls and cultural faux pas, as well as how to make...

  • Cross-Cultural Servanthood (44) (Monday, 10 September 2007)

Duane Elmer asked people around the world how they felt about Western missionaries. The response? "Missionaries could be more effective if they did not think they were better than us."

The last thing we want to do in cross-cultural ministry is to offend people in other cultures. Unfortunately, all too often and even though we don't mean it, our actions communicate superiority, paternalism, imperialism and arrogance. Our best intentions become unintentional insults. How can we minister in ways that are received as true Christlike service?

    Cross-cultural specialist Duane...

  • Peaceable Witness Among Muslims (13) (Wednesday, 03 October 2007)

This book provides a unique treatment of Christian engagement with Muslims. Gordon D. Nickel offers provocative, innovative proposals for drawing on the Anabaptist peacemaking heritage to develop a peaceable method for communicating the gospel of peace among Muslims.

For many centuries relations between Christians and Muslims have been stormy at best. What would happen if Christian speaking and action among Muslims flowed from the gospel that Christians profess?

Gordon combines academic study of Islam with lively interest in...

  • Teaching Cross-Culturally: An Incarnational Model for Learning and Teaching (24) (Monday, 17 September 2007)

Teaching Cross-Culturally is a challenging consideration of what it means to be a Christian educator in a culture other than your own. Chapters include discussions about how to uncover cultural biases, how to address intelligence and learning styles, and teaching for biblical transformation.

Teaching Cross-Culturally is ideal for the western-trained educator or missionary who plans to work in a non-western setting, as well as for those who teach in an increasingly multicultural North America.
